Olia Fedorova. Off-road signs

Off-road Signs is series of interventions into the landscape performed in the Kharkiv region in 2021.

“I travelled with road signs carrying my own texts to remote locations out in the country and installed them amid desolate landscapes to reveal the emptiness, underscore the silence and lay the groundwork for new meanings. The signs were installed for a brief period of time only and did not leave a trace in the spaces.

The sign with an ellipsis that symbolizes a pause, incompleteness or hope for a continuation is the one that I didn’t manage to install before Russia’s fullscale invasion of Ukraine. With my native landscapes currently inaccessible to me, both physically and in terms of meanings, I had to install the sign amidst the mountainous landscapes in Austria, where I evacuated after fleeing the war. The fact that it was the sign with an ellipsis gives me hope to return home. The twin of this sign is back home, amidst the landscapes of the Kyiv region, without me.”
